Four Legs and Fast

April 7, 2019 By Science Sparrow

Scientists know that whales’ ancestors evolved from the sea to land, and back to the sea. Archeologists recently discovered the first indisputable record of a quadrupedal whale skeleton for the whole Pacific Ocean. It was found in the coastal desert Playa Media Luna in Peru. It is 42.6 million years old, making it the oldest complete skeleton found yet in the Americas, and the most complete found outside India and Pakistan. This new record from the southeastern Pacific demonstrates that early quadrupedal whales crossed the South Atlantic and attained nearly a global distribution with a combination of terrestrial and aquatic movement abilities less than 20 million years after their origin. The findings were published in the journal Current Biology.
